Exercise Boosts the Immune System and Helps Keep You From Getting a Cold or Flu

In the beginning of the year many people decided they would start exercising to lose weight and get in better shape. But here is another reason to get moving. A study released in November of 2010 stated that exercise reduces cold and flu symptoms and makes them more mild than in people who do not.

In the study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, during a 12-week period, individuals who exercised five days a week had a 43 percent lower incidence of respiratory infections than people who only exercised one day per week. While the exact reason why people who exercise regularly have fewer cold and flu symptoms is unknown, one possible reason could be increased immune activity during aerobic (cardiovascular) exercise. After exercise there is a three-hour increase in white blood cells circulating in the body and throughout the lungs. This provides extra protection that people who do not exercise as often do not get. Also, stress hormones suppress the body’s immune response. During aerobic exercise stress hormone release is lowered and the immune system has more ability to fight infection. After a few hours the immune response goes back to its normal levels but each exercise session allows the immune system to fight off infections more diligently over the course the week.

The Wisconsin Upper Respiratory Symptom Survey was used to capture the cold and flu symptoms. The number of times exercising per week and the fitness level was also assessed. One thousand two people were studied and in addition to having fewer sick days, the participants who exercised also had milder symptoms if they did catch a cold or flu.

The results of the study offer more proof that consistent exercise supports the overall health of the body and mind. No one likes to feel poorly or be sick so grab those sneakers and make exercise a normal part of your routine. Get the family and friends in on the action too. The family that exercises together stays healthy together.

Today Happiness is getting paid to do something I would do for free!

Today happiness is getting paid to do something I would do for free! I am a big fan of Chef Rebecca Katz and anytime she is in town I look forward to spending time with her.  Besides being a phenomenal person, she is a wealth of information about how to make healthy food taste incredible.  I would follow her around just to soak up any tidbits of information she shares while she is teaching.  I was so happy when she asked me to help her with cooking classes that she is teaching in Maryland in the fall.  It is a gift for me to work with someone who is a mentor for me.  What is even better is this is an opportunity to be paid for spending time learning and hanging with Rebecca. It also allows me to continue to grow professionally by working with Rebecca in teaching people how to cook and eat healthy meals!  It is a gift when I get to benefit from doing something I will thoroughly enjoy!

Is there something in your day that is bringing you happiness?  Take a moment and feel the appreciate for something that makes you happy.

Live Vibrantly,

Dr. Dae

Heart Treatment Twice as Effective in Treating Women than Men

February is heart health month and is purpose is to bring awareness to the public. Having a heart health month is extremely important for women because 1 in 2 women will die of heart disease. Heart disease will impact women more than all cancers combined. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in women and most women are not aware of it.

Fortunately, with the increased awareness and women learning more about their heart health, and doctors and researchers creating studies that include women, a positive difference has been made in the quality in health care of women. A wonderful example of a heart health study showing positive treatments for women comes from University of Rochester Medical Center, which was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. This study revealed that a cardiac resynchronization therapy known as MADIT-CRT was twice as effective in women than in men. Women had a 70 percent reduction in heart failure as compared to their male counterparts who had a 35 percent reduction. To be clear, a 35 percent reduction in cardiac failure is wonderful, so a 70 percent reduction is excellent. This therapy, which is a combination pacemaker and defibrillator device, reduced both cardiac failure and death significantly in the patients that used it. This therapy works better in smaller hearts and therefore is more effective in women than men. One of the lead researchers conceded that until recently women have often been overlooked in heart-related studies, which makes this an event a more significant study for women and cardiac health.

For women with heart disease it is excellent to find treatments that are specifically effective for our bodies. The more awareness we can share with women about how to identify and successfully treat heart disease, the healthier women will become and we can begin to reduce the statistic that shows 50 percent of women will die from heart disease. This study is a great example that there are differences in the way men and women need to be treated with respect to the same condition.

Our bodies and different and we deserve to have research conducted on us to find treatments to positively impact our bodies too.
