Hot Flashes–Treatments that May Help

Hot flashes have been a constant problem for women in the United States. Each month there are articles about the best treatments for women experiencing hot flashes, and most of them look at taking soy supplements or hormone replacement. I have found, working with women in my practice, that the most effective treatments to reduce hot flashes require behavioral change and adrenal support supplementation.

In the March 3, 2011 online addition of “Menopause: The Journal of the North American Menopause Society” there was an article about a study that measured and compared the benefits of hormone replacement, soy supplementation and a placebo for treating hot flashes. The study concluded that hormone replacement therapy reduced the incidence of hot flashes slightly more than soy supplementation. Both were more useful in reducing the number of hot flashes than the placebo. In 2002, the NIH Nurses Health Study conclusively showed taking hormone replacement therapy can increase the risk of breast cancer, heart disease and stroke. This means that women who decide to take hormone replacement need to be placed on this treatment using the lowest dose for the shortest period of time in order to not increase the risk for the other diseases.

As a physician, I find it disturbing to put a patient on any medication that increases the risk of other diseases. As a naturopathic physician I always look towards the full spectrum of treatment plans, not just medications or supplements as the answer. In my practice I have been able to reduce hot flashes by working with women on behavioral changes including improving the quality of the diet, improving quality of sleep and reducing stress responses. For example, plant-based diets increase the nutrients in the diet. Plant-based diets also tend to reduce any extra weight on the body, which is important because excess fat produces extra estrogen in the body and creates a hormonal imbalance including increased hot flashes. The fiber in a plant-based diet helps to bind to extra estrogens and draw them out of the body, which can help balance hormones.

Improper sleep patterns can cause hormonal imbalances as well.  The constant stress of the everyday life affects the adrenal glands and female hormones. Stress reduction and sometimes additional adrenal support can reduce hot flashes as well. When my patients focus on these issues they reduce and sometimes eliminate hot flashes.

What Causes Hot Flashes?

In my last article I discussed a common problem among women in their 40’s and 50’s – hot flashes or hot flushes. I realized after I wrote it that I should have taken a step back and explained what hot flashes or hot flushes are before I reviewed an article about how to treat them. This article will explain about what a hot flash is, and what can affect them. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the term hot flash the definition is a sudden brief sensation of heat generally associated with menopause, which is the ceasing of the menstrual cycle in women. The heat is caused by a short dilation of the blood vessels that causes a wave of heat usually in the chest and head regions of the body. Hot flashes are an uncomfortable side effect of imbalanced hormones, usually associated with changes in estrogen levels or the ratio between the levels of estrogen and progesterone in women. Hot flashes can be more intense in women who have experienced chemotherapy, radiation or surgical removal of the their ovaries. This is because the ovaries are the main producers of estrogen and progesterone in women, and when strong medical treatments damage their ability to produce normal hormone levels the imbalance is felt in the body immediately and dramatically. Hot flashes are made worse by emotional stress, high temperatures, some medications or other medical conditions. Hot flashes can also be worsened by behavioral factors such as poor diets, stressful lifestyles, and obesity. Poor diets include the standard American diet which consists of highly processed foods, fast food, high sugar, high meat, and low vegetable diets. These diets usually do not contain the good fats, high fiber and vitamins and minerals the body needs to produce the correct ratios of estrogen and progesterone. Stress-filled lifestyles could include stress at work, stress in your personal relationship, stress in your home environment, financial stressors or even physical stressors.

Being overweight or obese may not seem like an important contributor to hot flashes but it is because our fat cells actually produce excess estrogen in the body. The more overweight a women is, the more likely her fat cells are producing more estrogen which throw off the appropriate estrogen to progesterone ratio, causing hot flashes or other female issues each month.

The 6 Secrets to Happiness

At last we have arrived at the juicy part of “Thrive: Finding Happiness the Blue Zone Way,” by Dan Buettner– what is the take home lessons for us all? These are all areas that need to be considered before you move into a community because they influence your happiness and your health.

In general people spend half of their waking hours at work so having the right parameters for your work life hugely impacts happiness. When considering work make sure you have the right job for you to bring you satisfaction, avoid long commutes, take your vacation time, work with people that you would socialize with outside of work and then do so.

Social life can take on many forms–some that create health and happiness are joining a club, connecting with people who share your faith, marrying the right person for you and understanding the joys and complications of relationships including those with your children.

Financial thriving comes from having enough to make sure your basic needs are met, so implement a savings plan, and avoid unnecessary credit card or other debt.

Activities in the home include spending time with the people you love, reducing the electronics and TV interaction in the home, getting pets, creating quiet meditation spaces, having a family room and using it, growing a garden, making your home spaces look pretty, and getting enough sleep.

Finally, for yourself look at your gifts, passions and values and make sure everything in your life reflects what is most important to you. These are your secrets to finding health and happiness.
